By the end of 2003, Wyeth, the main producer of hormone replacement therapy, cancelled the contracts of more than half of the Premarin farmers it maintained in Canada and parts of the Midwestern United States. In doing so, thousands of pregnant mares were sent to auction . Horses were put up for adoption throughout Canada and the United States.
Redwings decided to bring two of these unwanted mares to the Sanctuary. Scarlett had been purchased by United Pegasus, and brought to California from Canada. Redwings knew they had to help these equines and publicize their plight. United Pegasus agreed to let Redwings take Scarlett as a symbol of the hardships these animals suffered.
Although Scarlett had been handled, she was still shy around humans, frightened of loud sounds , and generally uncomfortable in her stall. Redwings staff worked patiently with her until she became more relaxed and happy.
On May 3, 2004, Scarlett delivered Rhett. After he was weaned, he went into a Redwings screened foster home where he has lived a happy life.
Scarlett lives in our draft herd with the other horses that Redwings rescued from the Premarin auctions. She was never broke to ride but is very friendly and would make a great companion horse.
