Maxi is a big beautiful Hanoverian mare. She was owned by a large show jumping barn in southern California who purchased her from a breeder as a 7 year old show jumping prospect. Soon after her purchase in 1998, Maxi began to have neurological issues and tested positive for EPM. EPM short for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, is a neurological disease caused by a parasite, carried by opossums, that attacks the central nervous system. For the next 7 months Maxi was treated with antibiotics and slowly made a full recovery from the disease.
Once fully recovered, Maxi returned to training as a show jumper. She was very strong over fences and proved to be a difficult ride. Maxi also struggled with intermittent soundness problems that threatened her future as a jumper. A Redwings supporter offered to give Maxi a home, even though she was not sound enough to ride. Soon after Maxi’s new guardian began to have financial difficulties and could no longer keep Maxi, she contacted Redwings in the Spring of 2000. Redwings agreed to give Maxi a permanent home.
Today Maxi is happy and loves her neighbor Jasper who is one of our oldest equine residents.
